Description
Two shops, dating from 1892, stand prominently on Maldon's High Street. The building is constructed of red English-bond brick with decorative orange terracotta dressings, topped with a machine-made plain tile roof featuring decorative ridge tiles. The exterior is three storeys high with a two-window arrangement. A notable feature is the elaborate moulded cornice and parapet, embellished with terracotta egg-and-dart motifs and swags. Thin pilasters flank the façade, framing the first and second floors and culminating in urn finials on the parapet. The second floor is punctuated by two pairs of sash windows with terracotta architraves, their headings swept to terracotta keystones bearing foliate panels. A central terracotta panel is inscribed 'B 1892'. The first floor boasts two canted bay windows with hipped roofs of scalloped plain tiles and dentilled cornices, incorporating casement windows with square glazed panels over transoms displaying a pattern of glazing bars, and boldly moulded painted stone sills. The ground floor features a painted stone dentilled cornice, with a continuous 19th-century fascia and consoles over Corinthian stone pilasters, which are both fluted and panelled. A central alleyway separates the two high-quality contemporary shop fronts, each showcasing decorative patterned glazing over transoms. The interior remains uninspected.
