Description

No. 58 High Street is a shop built in 1883, designed in the Queen Anne style. It features red English-bond brick with terracotta dressings and a hipped roof made of machine-made plain tiles, which has decorative ridge elements and a tall ridge finial, along with an articulated stack on the east side. The building has three storeys and an attic, arranged in a symmetrical three-bay layout. The wide central bay and narrower side bays are framed by giant pilasters on the first and second storeys.

Above the eaves line, the attic has a shaped gable that ends in a simplified brick pediment, featuring a square window with glazing bars and coloured glass. On the second floor of the central bay, there are two sash windows, each with the upper sash divided into four sections and adorned with coloured glass. These windows are set on a linking stone sill, with terracotta keystones and arches that have carved shaped soffits. The first floor has a canted bay window, topped with a hipped, scalloped plain tile roof, and features casement windows with coloured glass panels above the transom. The second floor side bays have similar but wider sash windows with aprons and a sunflower motif, while the first floor side bays have casement windows like the central bay. The shop front was in the process of alteration or reconstruction at the time of the survey. A terracotta date plaque on the stack indicates the year of construction, 1883. The interior was not inspected.
