Description
No. 47 High Street is a shop with a flat, built in 1893. It features red English-bond brick, stone and terracotta dressings, and a flank of yellow stocks, topped with a machine-made plain tile roof that has decorative ridge cresting.
The building stands three storeys high with an attic and has a single-window range. The attic is adorned with a Dutch gable that has stone coping and a central plain double-hung sash window, which is topped by a segmental pediment. On either side of the gable are rectangular terracotta plaques with floral designs. The stories of the building are separated by flush stone bands.
There is a recessed central panel on the first and second floors, featuring moulded brick edging and ogee curves at the top that connect to the sill of the attic window above. Within this panel, the second floor displays a terracotta panel inscribed with 'B 1893' along with two sash windows framed in moulded brick. The first floor features a central stone canted bay window with a cornice, a panelled frieze, and moulded surrounds for the plain sash windows, which include a central vertical glazing bar. Moulded sills with acanthus scrolls and two additional terracotta plaques align with the head of the bay on each side.
On the ground floor, there is a 19th-century shop front that includes a stone dentilled cornice, a timber fascia, and panelled plinths that support paired columns with fluted bell capitals flanking the entrance. The central canted door recess and windows feature plain glass with decorative glazed panels above the transom. The interior has not been inspected.
