Description

A pair of houses built in the early 19th century, located on George Street in Harwich. The houses are constructed of red Flemish-bond brickwork with a slate hipped roof; number 16 now has 20th-century concrete pantiles. The buildings extend over three storeys, incorporating cellars. The second floor of number 15 features a recessed 20th-century double-hung sash window with small panes. Number 16 has a late 20th or early 21st-century fixed light window that opens from the top. A single-course brick string band runs below the second-floor window sills. The first floor has two double-hung sash windows with small panes, each set beneath a segmental brick arched head. A broad brick string band is positioned above the ground floor, which has two similar double-hung sash windows, each of these having two vertical glazing bars. The houses have two entrance doors, positioned in plain raised surrounds with simple hoods, panelled reveals and rectangular fanlights (the fanlight above the door of number 16 includes lozenge-pattern glazing bars). These houses are of the same build as number 17 nearby, and the doorcases of numbers 16 and 17 are interconnected. A substantial chimney stack is located on the party wall and extending through the front roof slope.
