Description
23 and 24 West Street are two attached houses that were originally identical. They date from the early 19th century and are built of red Flemish-bond brickwork with a gabled roof covered in clay plain tiles. The houses have a parallel hipped rear roof also made of clay plain tiles. They are two storeys high with attics, featuring three flat-roofed dormers behind a plain parapet. The front facade has a two-window arrangement of double-hung sash windows with small panes, set under slightly curved rubbed brick arches. Number 23 has an additional 20th-century casement window beneath a brick arch. The front doors, which have six panels, are slightly recessed and framed by moulded architraves. Number 23 retains its original moulded cornice and frieze with console-shaped ends. There are two large rectangular chimney stacks located behind the ridgeline. Inside, the front rooms have encased spine beams. Both houses originally had narrow winder stairs, but the staircase in Number 23 has been altered at ground-floor level. The interior of Number 24 has not been seen.
