Description
The Billy Public House, formerly two houses, dates from the early 19th century. It is located on West Street in Harwich. The north-western block is constructed of red brick, rendered on the front, with a clay plain tile gabled roof. The southern block has a painted brick front and a low-pitched gabled roof covered in Welsh slate.
The north-western block has two hipped dormers, each with two casement lights, and a stack on the ridgeline, with another behind the ridge at the northern end. The first floor has a large square double-hung sash window with small panes and a moulded surround, a similar narrower double-hung sash window, and a rear-central blind window. The ground floor has two similar double-hung sash windows and a centrally placed door with a plain architrave and rectangular fanlight. A black tarred plinth provides access to the cellar. The southern block has two two-light casement windows with six panes on the first floor. The ground floor has a large recessed double-hung sash window with horizontal panes under a rendered architrave, and a door with a rectangular fanlight which is now fixed. A large stack behind the ridgeline incorporates three pots, one notably tall. Later 20th and 19th century rear extensions are visible, partly clad in black weatherboarding.
The interior retains remnants of early 19th century panelling and cornices, a shelf unit over the fireplace, and pilasters with applied panel decoration.
