Description

Nos. 18, 18A, 19, 19A, 20, and 20A on West Street in Harwich are early 19th-century flats that were formerly two or three houses. The buildings are constructed of brick and feature roofs that are hidden behind high parapets. They stand three storeys tall and include a large 20th-century flat-roofed extension and an external staircase at the rear.

The front of the southeastern part, which includes Nos. 18, 18A, 19, and 19A, is built in red Flemish bond and has a high plain parapet with raised string bands between the ground and first floors. It has a three-window range of double-hung sashes with small panes, set under slightly curved rubbed brick arches, with the center windows being narrower. The ground floor features two doors; the door to No. 18 has a semicircular rubbed brick arch and rendered impost blocks, with a six-panel design and an Adamesque fanlight above. This door is accessed by three stone steps with simple iron handrails. The door to No. 19 has a flat hood and narrow panelled pilasters, along with a frieze that has upcurved ends. This door is recessed and consists of six flat panels, with the upper two being glazed, and is reached by four steps with an iron handrail on baluster-like supports.

The front and the northwest flank of Nos. 20 and 20A are rendered, with No. 20 displaying a two-window range of unequal-sized 20th-century double-hung sash windows with small panes. There is also a plain opening for an access passage on the flank. The interior of the buildings is all from the 20th century.
