Description

The Smugglers Restaurant is a former public house, now serving as a wine bar and flats. It dates from the early 19th century and features red Flemish-bond brickwork topped with a slate hipped roof. The building stands three storeys high and includes cellars.

On the front elevation, the second floor has two square double-hung sash windows with small panes, separated by a single course string band below the window sills. The first floor features two tripartite groups of windows on either side of a central double-hung sash window, with flank piers and narrow double-hung sash sidelights. Each central window has a segmental-arched brick head and one vertical glazing bar.

The ground floor showcases a 19th-century public house front that wraps around to the Golden Lion Lane side. This façade includes a fascia with a cornice and two pairs of coupled windows with semicircular moulded arched heads, flanked by pilasters and a rendered stall riser. The Golden Lion Lane side has a windowless second floor and two tripartite groups of double-hung sashes facing George Street. The ground floor retains the public house front, featuring a pair of arched windows with enclosing pilasters and an area of brickwork with one small pane double-hung sash window.

The corner of the building is curved, with corbelling that creates a square corner under the eaves, and there is a corner entrance door. The building has two large stacks and is part of one build with Nos 15 and 16. The interior has not been inspected.
