Description

The George Inn is a public house located on Leeds Lower Street, dating from the early 19th century with later 19th-century alterations. At the rear, there are remains of a 16th-century timber-framed building. The ground floor is constructed of painted brick in Flemish bond, while the first floor features fishscale tiles, topped with a plain tile roof. The building is two storeys high and sits on a brick plinth, with projecting eaves that have flat soffits and a half-hipped roof. There is a small projecting stack at the left end, built on a low stone base, made of red and grey brick with tumbled offsets. The front facade has a regular arrangement of three glazing-bar sash windows and two gabled dormers.

To the left, there is a long 19th-century rear wing built with the same materials, featuring a brick ridge stack at either end and two 20th-century half-glazed doors. The right side has a shorter rear wing, which is connected to the left wing and constructed from the same materials. This wing is one storey and a garret high, with a tall brick stack. Additionally, there is a wing at right angles to the rear of the right wing, which runs parallel to the front range and abuts the end of the left wing. This wing is also from the 16th century, timber-framed, with the ground floor clad in painted brick and the first floor covered in plain tiles, topped with a plain tile roof. It is two storeys high with a roof hipped to the right and a gablet. The interior has been partially inspected.
