Description
4 and 5 West Street is a house now divided into two dwellings, dating from the 17th century and later. It features a timber frame with a rendered brick front and a gabled roof covered in concrete pantiles. The building has two storeys and attics.
The exterior presents a symmetrical front with a five-window arrangement of flush 19th-century double-hung sash windows that have moulded surrounds and margin glazing. The central part of the façade includes a blind window recess. There are two recessed door surrounds from the early 19th century, featuring a segmental reeded timber arch, reeded pilasters, and door architraves with a lozenge motif at the corners, along with contemporary four-panel doors.
No. 4 includes two flat-roofed dormers and a rendered gable end stack topped with decorative square pots. No. 5 has one segmental-headed dormer window with a double-hung sash window that also has margin glazing bars. The first-floor windows of No. 5 are adorned with coloured glass in the corners and share a rendered gable and stack with No. 6. Inside No. 4, some timber framing from the 17th century is exposed, while No. 5 features an inglenook stack with an oven and a mantel beam.
