Description

No. 40 Church Street is a house dating from the 16th and 18th centuries. It has a timber-framed structure with a rendered brick front and a roof covered in clay plain tiles. The gabled roof features two flat-roofed dormers set behind a parapet. The house has two storeys, attics, and cellars. The front facade displays a five-window range of flush double-hung sash windows with margin-glazing. The central bay projects slightly and includes a doorcase with a segmental pediment, consoles, a pulvinated frieze, and a moulded architrave. The entrance features a six-panel door with two glazed upper panels and a tall ridgeline stack is positioned centrally.

Inside, there are many 18th-century fittings, including L-hinges on cupboards and original architraves. The front rooms are adorned with moulded plaster cornices and boxed spine beams. The staircase on the ground floor has a Chinese Chippendale balustrade, with a replica above. At the top of the stairs, there are painted timber arches with keystones. A stair tower is located at the rear. The first floor includes an early 19th-century marble fire surround, while the ground floor features a reeded fire surround. The interior also has simple panelling and a side purlin roof with heavy collars. At the rear, there is a two-storey gabled block with late 16th-century timber-framing, showcasing an exposed jowled post, and the building is truncated at the northeast end.
