Description

This is a late 18th or early 19th century house on Church Street in Harwich. It is built of rendered brick, with some remaining ashlar, and has a gabled roof covered in Welsh slates. The house extends over three floors, with cellars beneath. The eaves have a boxed gutter with a moulded underside. The second floor has five square double-hung sash windows, each originally with six panes; at the time of survey, three were boarded up and one was missing. A raised band runs between the first and second floors. The second floor also has five double-hung sash windows, slightly recessed, with smaller panes. A broader raised band is located between the ground and first floors. The ground floor features four similar double-hung sash windows, each with projecting architraves and a timber entablature enclosing drum-mounted external shutters. A centrally positioned, pedimented doorcase has narrow pilasters and consoles, leading to a six-panel door. The upper two panels of the door are glazed, the central panels are raised and fielded, and the lower two are flush. A yard passage entrance is located at the north-west end of the facade, featuring a semicircular arch with a reeded architrave. The interior includes a staircase with turned balusters, and one first-floor room has a plaster cornice.
