Description
This property, now two separate dwellings, is a house dating from the mid-18th century. It is located in King’s Head Street, Harwich. The exterior is built of red Flemish-bond brickwork with a gabled concrete plain tile roof. The building is two storeys high, with attics and cellars, and features a plain parapet behind which are two hipped dormers. The upper part of the frontage has been rebuilt. A small ridgeline stack is located centrally. The first floor has five flush, double-hung sash windows with small panes set within rubbed brick arches and recessed aprons. Raised string bands are present below the parapet and between the floors. The ground floor has four similar flush, double-hung sash windows, and a centrally positioned, pedimented doorcase framed by fluted Doric pilasters, a pulvinated frieze, and two stone steps. The recessed front door has six panels, with the two upper panels glazed and panelled flanks. A segmental brick arch originally served as a yard entrance, but now provides access to No. 16A. A high black plinth is accompanied by rectangular glazed cellar lights, one featuring a cast-iron decorative grille.
Inside, substantial oak spine beams and bridging joists form the central stack bay. The cellar contains segmental-arched recesses and bridging joists, with chamfered joists featuring lamb's tongue stops. The building appears to be of a single build.
