Description
This is a house located at 27 King's Head Street in Harwich, dating from the late 18th century but with earlier origins. It features a timber frame with a red Flemish-bond brick front and a plain parapet, topped by a gabled concrete pantile roof.
The building has two storeys, attics, and cellars. The front elevation includes two flat-roofed dormers with cross-glazing pattern casements. On the first floor, there is one flush double-hung sash window with small panes and a rubbed brick flat arch, flanked by a central blind window. The ground floor has two similar windows and a central doorcase with an Ionic cornice and entablature over an eared architrave. The six-panel door, with the upper two panels glazed, is slightly recessed at the top of three stone steps. A glazed cellar light is set within a high plinth, which is fronted with wrought-iron bars. The parapet is rendered, with raised brick bands below it and between the storeys. The north-west gable features a Suffolk verge board, and there are two very tall stacks behind the rear wall.
At the rear, there is a low two-storey block with a catslide concrete tile roof and a three-storey hipped stair tower also covered with concrete tiles. The windows in this section are double-hung sashes with two vertical glazing bars. Inside, there is an eared architraved fire surround and old doors with butterfly hinges.
