Description

This is a house located at 45 King's Head Street in Harwich, dating from the early 19th century. It features a timber frame with a red brick front in Flemish bond, showing some signs of tuck pointing. The northwest gable is weatherboarded, while the rear elevation is rendered. The roof is gabled, covered with black clay pantiles, and has a plain parapet with stone coping.

The building has two storeys and a tall chimney stack that rises through the center of the front roof slope. On the first floor, there are two flush square double-hung sash windows, each with two vertical glazing bars. The upper part of the elevation, including the parapet and window arches, has been rebuilt. The ground floor is partly rendered and features two similar windows with slightly arched heads made of rubbed brick. The entrance has a semicircular-arched brick hood supported by painted timber imposts. The door consists of four raised-and-fielded panels above two flush panels. There is a similar arched opening leading to a yard passage, which has a door with vertical ventilator slots.

Inside, the northwest part of the ground floor has simple pine panelling, with an exposed spine beam and small elm joists above. There is a central fireplace with a mantel beam. The stairs have been reused and replaced with a ladder stair in front of the stack, which includes a good pine door.
