Description

Vine Cottage is a house dating from the early 18th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with the front plastered and a timber frame in the west gable triangle now covered in red brick. The house features a steep old red tile roof.

This two-storey, two-cell house has an end-chimney plan and faces south. The entrance leads into a larger east room, which has an internal east gable chimney and a winding stair that was formerly located beside the chimney on the north side. The south front includes a low stucco plinth, with two windows on each floor and a door situated between the lower windows. The windows are two-light flush casements with small panes, and there is a segmental arch over the window to the right of a three-quarter glazed door.

Inside, the cottage has an exposed chamfered axial beam, with joists that are squared on both floors. There is also evidence of a plaster ceiling in the roofslope for the attics in the loft. A small west gable window has been blocked. At the rear, there is a lean-to outshut and a new stair outside the rear wall in a tile-hung enclosure. Additionally, there is a two-storey east crosswing that contains a shop, which is not of special interest.
