Description

Fig Tree Cottage is a 16th century house that was originally an open hall. In the late 16th century, a floor and chimney were added. The southern bay, along with its rear outshut, likely dates from the 17th century, while the walls were cased in 18th century brick, and the older part of the house was heightened to two storeys. The timber frame is roughcast, with the ground floor front made of red brick in Flemish bond. The house has a steep old red tile roof, with part of the rear slope covered in slate.

This two-storey house faces east and is partly overlapped on the north side by a low link to Vine Cottage. It features two windows on each floor, which are three-light flush casement windows with rectangular quarries in the leaded glazing. To the left of the battened front door is a canted oriel window, and there is a small window to the right of the door. An internal chimney located a third of the way from the north end indicates the older part of the house, while an internal gable chimney was added to the formerly unheated southern bay.

Inside, the studs on the former southern wall of the hall are exposed, forming a screen with a peg hole in the post for bench support. There is an elaborate moulded axial beam with a central roll and ogee, featuring reserved chamfer and hollow on each side. The soffit of the joists displays scratch moulding. The beam is carried on a post rather than being jointed into the horizontal timbers of the original frame. The hall originally consisted of two bays.
