Description
The lychgate to the churchyard of the Church of St. Martin, built around 1900, is likely designed by architect Thomas Carter for the church of that period. This oak structure features a steep old red tile roof and is a small open design with two sill-beams, wallplates, and a ridge running north to south. Each side has two wide-spaced chamfered posts set in from the corners, with convex braces extending down to the sill beam at the corners. There are also two cusped curved braces connecting each post to the wallplate. Longer curved braces from the posts support a cambered collar to the second rafter in from each end, with a wooden cross as infill. The ends of the structure are adorned with moulded bargeboards. There are sinkings for gate fixings on the posts closer to the road, and a Yorkstone threshold is present on the roadside. This lychgate is included for its group value.
