Description
No. 51 Church Street is a wine bar that was formerly a public house, built in the early to mid 19th century. The building is made of rendered brick and features a Welsh slate Mansard roof behind a high parapet. It has two storeys, attics, and cellars.
On the Market Street side, there are two flat-roofed dormers set behind the parapet, which has five recessed panels that resemble blind window openings. Below this is a moulded string band. The first floor has three square recesses; the center one contains a small pane tripartite double-hung sash window, while the outer recesses have conventionally proportioned double-hung sash windows that are centrally placed. There are also blind window recesses on either side. The ground floor features an arcaded public house front with a deep fascia and a modillioned cornice. It has nine bays separated by tall narrow banded rusticated piers with capitals adorned with consoles. Between these piers are plain semicircular arches, most of which have glazed infillings. The northeast bay includes an entrance door, and the northwest corner has a splayed entrance lobby behind a corner pier. There are two cast-iron grilles leading to the basement.
The Church Street elevation is similar, featuring one dormer, two slightly recessed double-hung sash windows with small panes on the first floor, and three bays of arcade on the ground floor. A large ridgeline stack is also present.
