Description

20 and 21 Church Street are offices dating from the 16th century. The building is timber-framed and partly rendered, with sections of 20th-century red brick and a clay pantile gabled roof. It is two stories tall with attics and features large gabled rear extensions.

The front of the building has two flat-roofed dormers that contain two-light small pane casements. At the time of the survey, the first floor had two rectangular window openings in the render. The ground floor featured two large square openings with soldier arches in the red brick walling, along with two adjoining 20th-century door openings that have boarded doors. The ends of the building have pilaster-like strips of old brickwork.

At the rear, there are two gable-roofed extensions of unequal projection, both covered with 20th-century clay pantile roofs. The rear slope of the front range is finished in machine-made clay plain tiles. The northern rear extension has a rendered gable elevation and black weatherboarded flanks, with one large stack protruding through the roof of the longer northern extension. The original 16th-century timber frame, which was formerly jettied at the front, is now partially reconstructed at a slightly lower level in the roof. The rear blocks are 17th-century timber-framed extensions. At the time of the survey, the building was being recorded and altered.
