Description
No. 57 Church Street is a shop with a flat, dating from the 16th century or earlier. It features a timber-framed structure with a pebbledashed upper storey and a gabled roof made of clay machine-made tiles. The building has two storeys with attics and is jettied over the street. The gabled cross-wing includes a single double-hung sash window with two vertical glazing bars on the first floor, topped with a 19th-century painted timber pediment. There is a small two-light casement window in the attic. The ground floor showcases an early 19th-century shop front with a door featuring a reeded surround and a fanlight. The northwest corner of the jetty is adorned with 19th-century bargeboards and console brackets. A ridgeline stack is supported by four decorative posts. The timber framing is partially exposed on the northwest flank corner.
Inside, there is an 18th-century cornice plaster casing for the bridging joist and spine beam, indicating a former intruded cross passage on the northern side. At the rear, there is an additional block with a Welsh slate roof and a black weatherboarded southeast flank. A crownpost remains in situ here, suggesting this may have been the service wing of a former hall house. Old photographs indicate a row of three similar gables.
