Description
No. 9 Town Green is a shop that dates back to the early 16th century, with a re-roofing in the 17th century and many 20th-century details. The building is timber-framed, rendered, and colourwashed, topped with a roof made of a mixture of black glazed and red pantiles. It stands two storeys tall, featuring a late 19th-century shop front on the right. To the left, there are two sashes of different sizes, both with glazing bars. The first floor jetties out, supported by a bressumer on three console brackets. There are also two late 18th-century three-light casements on the first floor. The south gable wall has been rebuilt, and the building has a gabled roof with a central ridge stack. At the rear, there is a 17th-century cross wing.
Inside, the cross wing is a later addition to the original single-pile structure, and it features a timber four-centred doorway with chamfered jambs that leads to what was once the exterior. The timber frame has heavy scantling. On the ground floor's north internal partition, there are remains of three panels of wall paintings, the subject of which is indecipherable, painted in colour over the studs. The two central studs have mortices for the four-centred doorway. In the extreme south room, there is a sunk quadrant-moulded bridging beam. The roof has jowled principal studs that bear arched braces to chamfered tie beams, with one pair of crude queen struts. The roof of the cross wing features two tiers of butt purlins.
