Description
No. 17 Town Green is a shop and flat dating to the 17th century, with a late 19th-century facade. It forms part of a row of buildings. The building is timber-framed, but largely rebuilt in brick, and has a pantile roof. It is two storeys high. The symmetrical shop front features a central pair of part-glazed doors with a rectangular cast-iron lattice vent above. Sliding sash shop windows with arched upper sashes create spandrels for the vents. A glazed tile plinth is decorated with medallions of a bull and a sheep, indicating that the shop was formerly a butcher's. Coloured tile paving is laid in front of the shop. The sloping fascia is flanked by paired timber brackets on half-fluted pilasters, and iron bars with decorated terminals are positioned above each window, likely for displaying meat. The first floor has two sash windows with horns. A brick dentil eaves cornice runs along the top of the building. A stack is located at the rear of the ridge. A rear wing is attached to the main building. Inside, a surviving 17th-century spine bridging beam remains, with ogee and nicked chamfer stops.
