Description
No. 9 Pople Street is a house that was once a public house and has now returned to domestic use. It dates from the late 17th century and was altered in the early 20th century. The building likely started as timber-framed, with a brick underbuilt jetty at the front and a brick-skinned rear. The front slope has a pantiled roof, while the rear is covered with corrugated tiles. The layout features a lobby entrance plan and the building stands two storeys high.
The entrance, which is an early 20th-century half-glazed door, is located left of centre and is flanked by an early 19th-century three-light casement window on either side. To the right, there is a fixed three-light window. The first floor shows signs of a jetty bressumer, although the timber studwork on this level is false. There are one three-light and one four-light casement window on the first floor. The gabled roof has a ridge stack over the door that was rebuilt and turned transverse to the roof in the early 20th century. At the rear, there is a one-storey cross wing on the north-east side, featuring a pantiled gabled roof and a ridge stack.
Inside, there is no visible evidence of the original timber frame, but a large bridging beam runs along the entire length of the ground floor.
