Description

18 and 20 Cock Street are two houses from the early 18th century that were altered around 1760. They were unified in 1879 when a rear extension was built, but were separated again in the 20th century. The houses are constructed of brick and have a whitewashed facade. The front slope has a plaintile roof, while the rear is covered with pantiles. The buildings are two storeys tall with a dormer attic and feature five irregular bays.

The central entrance has a panelled door set in a doorcase with fluted Doric columns and decorative guttae panels beneath the door hood. On either side of the door, there are two late 18th-century sash windows with glazing bars in flush frames, and a sash window is located above the door. To the left on the first floor are two early 18th-century cross casements with metal opening lights, while to the right are two similar but late 18th-century casements. The gabled roof has three gabled dormers added in 1879, along with a ridge stack from the same year. The north gable-end stack has been rebuilt, and the gable head features tumbling.

The rear of the building once had a continuous two-storey outshut, with the southern part raised and rebuilt in 1879, consisting of four bays and illuminated by cross casements. There is a serrated stack that matches the front ridge stack. The interior of No. 20 retains little of its original features, while No. 18 has not been inspected internally. The roof structure includes staggered butt purlins and collars, with the north dormer positioned where an earlier one once stood.
