Description
This range comprises two shops and one house, dating to the late 16th century, with later alterations. The building is timber-framed and clad in brick, with a colourwashed finish to numbers 3 and 3A. It has a pantile roof. The building is two storeys high. Two 20th-century shop fronts are located at the south end (numbers 3 and 3A). The remaining doorways are from the 19th century, including a panelled door at number 5, both set within cases featuring fluted pilasters and a flat hood. A three-light mid-19th century casement window lights the interior of number 5. Four similar three-light casement windows are evenly spaced on the first floor of the entire range. The gabled roof is topped with three rebuilt ridge stacks. A 20th-century addition is present at the east gable and rear. The original interior is one room deep; the rear studs are visible in the rear wall of number 3. A wall plate with roll and hollow mouldings extends into number 3A. A chamfered bridging beam incorporates barred tongue stops. Timber framing remains to the first floor of number 3A, including jowled principal studs to the rear, close studded, arched wall braces, chamfered tie beams with tongue stops, and an original roof structure comprised of continuous clasped purlins, lower butt purlins, cambered collars, and undiminished principals, with the principals cut back and moulded to accommodate the clasped purlin.
