Description
Rook House is a house dating from the early 17th century, located on Vicar Street in Wymondham. It features a timber-framed structure that is rendered and colourwashed. The house was formerly jettied at the first floor on both the front and rear but has since been underbuilt. The frame originally consisted of seven bays, although only five are now visible as window bays on the exterior. The layout follows a lobby entrance plan, with a door positioned to the right of centre. To the right of the door are two 18th-century sash windows with glazing bars, and one sash window is located to the left. There is a carriage entrance at the rear, on the south end of the elevation. The first floor is illuminated by five 3-light 18th-century casements. A brick ridge stack is situated above the door.
Inside, the ground floor features an arch cut through the stack to create a passage, and the fireplaces have been rebuilt. There are plain-stopped chamfered bridging beams, and the south room contains an early 19th-century cupboard in the rear wall, which was likely a former window. On the first floor, the rear wall retains a 4-light diamond-mullioned casement with 20th-century glazing. The roof structure includes principals, two tiers of butt purlins, and collars, many of which have been renewed.
