Description
No. 140 High Street is a shop that dates from the early to mid 16th century and 17th century. It features a timber-framed structure with a rendered finish and plain tiled roofs. The building is two storeys high and includes a gabled cross-wing, with part of the range parallel to the street and a higher ridgeline.
The cross-wing has a 19th-century two-light casement window with a central horizontal glazing bar on the first floor. The ground floor displays a 20th-century shop front that includes a fascia and a display window made up of two large panes alongside a glazed door. The adjoining range to the southeast is set back behind the cross-wing and has a 12-pane sash window with a moulded surround on the first floor. The ground floor features a wide passage entrance with painted boarded doors. There are also 19th-century lean-to rear extensions with asbestos sheet roofs behind the cross-wing, which is hipped at the back.
Inside, the cross-wing has a three-bay structure from the 16th century, with jowled posts and square exposed floor joists, showing no evidence of a jetty. The roof features a crown-post design with thin longitudinal braces to the front gable and over the first tie beam. The collar purlin stops at the king stud on the second tie beam, and the central collar over the front two bays is tenoned rather than halved into a slightly sturdier rafter pair. There is some evidence of wall bracing and former windows on the front and rear elevations, with originally single three-bay chambers on each floor. One 17th-century door with moulded rebated boards remains on the first floor. The adjoining range, dating from the early 17th century, has a clasped side-purlin roof, a chamfered spine beam, and smaller square floor joists.
