Description

This early 15th and 17th century house, now used as surgeries, is located on Maldon’s High Street. The building is timber-framed and rendered, with a brick front and a plain tile roof. The roof is gabled, matching that of the adjacent property at number 164, and features a hipped section with a gablet to the south-east. An off-centre stack rises from the roof.

The exterior is two storeys high with a two-window front. The first floor has two casement windows with central glazing bars. The ground floor has a six-panel door, a similar door in a surround, and two slightly projecting shop windows with painted timber fascias, pilasters, and stall-risers. One shop window has three lights with a central horizontal glazing bar, and the other has two lights. A catslide roof extends to the rear.

The interior retains the structure of a former hall house with a cross-wing dating back to the early 15th century. The cross-wing remains largely intact, although the original jettied front wall and gable have been lost. The roof features simple crown posts with longitudinal braces. The hall itself was rebuilt in the 17th century as a jettied two-story structure, and its structure survives beneath more recent renovation work.
