Description

The Old Castle is a public house that has been converted into a house, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of rendered brick and features a parapeted, gabled plain tile roof with projecting end stacks, one of which has been truncated.

The building has two storeys, an attic, and a cellar, with a three-window range on the front facade. There are two hipped dormers on the front, each containing a window with a central vertical glazing bar, set behind a plain parapet. On the first floor, there is a coupled pair of plain sash windows in wider openings, which may have originally been tripartite windows, flanking a central plain sash window with a semicircular head. The ground floor features a central mid-19th century doorcase with pilasters, a hood supported on consoles, a shallow fanlight, and a door with six moulded panes. On either side of the doorcase are canted, flat-roofed bay windows, each with a sash window that has central vertical glazing bars. The facade is accentuated by projecting wide pilaster-like strips at each edge.

At the rear, there is a tall one-storey-and-attic wing built on top of a retaining wall, featuring a slate gabled roof and a tall ridgeline stack. The first floor of this rear wing is clad in black weatherboarding and has two 20th-century small-paned casements. The rear wall is rendered and includes a sash window with a central vertical glazing bar in the attic. The rear of the main block is partly constructed of red brick. The interior has not been inspected.
