Description

This is a shop and cottage dating to the 16th and early 17th centuries. It is timber-framed and now rendered, with plain tile roofs. A stack is located behind the junction of the roofs. The building is two storeys high and has a cross wing at its south-east end, gabled to the street. A lower, recessed block is parallel to the street and connects with numbers 140 and 142. The cross wing features bargeboards. A 16-pane sash window is located on the first floor of the cross wing, with a moulded surround. The ground floor has a 12-pane sash window. The first floor of the recessed block has a 20-pane sash window above a 20th-century shop front, featuring a fascia, blind box, a display window with two large panes, and a glazed door. On the south-east flank of the cross wing is a three-light, small-paned, horizontally-sliding casement window on the ground floor. The rear of the cross wing has a hipped roof. The render on the rear elevation is ashlar. A 16-pane sash window is located on the first floor of the rear wing, and a slate-roofed rear lean-to extension has a tall rear wall. The interior of the cross wing has three bays with jowled storey posts. It was likely originally a parlour/solar wing, with the rear bay on the first floor partitioned from the two-bay front chamber. Wall studs are closer on the exposed south-east elevation; there appears to have been a double window with a central stud on the first floor of the front elevation. The first floor of the adjoining block, formerly the hall, has a blocked 17th-century arched fireplace. The rear lean-to contains an early 19th-century door with margin glazing and a plaster cornice.
