Description
No. 131 High Street is a shop that dates from the 16th century or earlier. It features a timber-framed structure that is rendered, topped with a gabled roof covered in asbestos slates. The building has two storeys and presents a single-window range at the front. There is a rear extension with a lean-to roof adjoining No. 133, which is not included in this listing. The front elevation has a pebbledashed first floor and a sash window with a moulded surround and a central vertical glazing bar. The ground floor showcases a 19th-century shop front with two large panes and a canted-out fascia. The exposed north-west flank displays 20th-century pargeting and barge-boards. This building is a fragment of a late medieval structure, featuring a central jowled post in the rear wall that supports a flat tie beam dovetailed over the front plate. Inside, the building originally had a long arch brace from the rear post, and the chamfering stops well short of the front wall, indicating a roof overhang of 'Wealden' type. The floor structure, which may have been inserted, includes a spine beam with double-ogee chamfers and hollow-chamfered bridging joists from the early to mid-16th century.
