Description
No. 5 Brentgovel Street is a shop dating from the late 16th century, with exterior alterations and extensions made in the 1970s and 1980s. The building is timber-framed and rendered, with 20th-century plain tiles on the roof. It has two storeys and the original front range consists of two bays with an end chimney stack. The exterior features a wide jetty, sash windows on the upper storey, and heavy woodwork in a traditional style at the shop front.
Inside, the ground floor has a main beam and a cross-beam in front of the chimney stack, both with double roll-mouldings. The upper storey reveals the exposed frame, which is complete on the rear and west side walls. The front wall displays close-studding with arched braces and housings for two three-light diamond-mullioned windows. The main beams are chamfered, and the joists are positioned on edge. There is a plain timber lintel above the open fireplace, and an edge-halved and bridled scarf joint is present in the rear wall plate. The clasped purlin roof is visible due to the removal of plaster between the joists and consists of three bays, with one collar missing.
