Description
No. 34 Brentgovel Street is a house dating from the late 16th century. It is timber-framed and rendered, with a slate roof. The building has two storeys, with a second storey added in the 20th century. This house represents the single surviving bay of a 16th-century structure, which now forms part of late 20th-century shop premises. The rendered exterior, shop front, and upper sash windows are all from the 20th century. Inside, part of the original frame survives on the first storey. The west end wall features arched braces to the tie-beam, but there is no evidence of original studding, suggesting that the building may have either extended further west or been adjacent to an earlier structure. The roof has been raised, resulting in the loss of its original form.
