Description

BURY ST EDMUNDS

TL8564SW BRENTGOVEL STREET 639-1/7/198 (South side) No.34

GV II

House. Late C16. Timber-framed and rendered; slate roof. 2 storeys, with an added C20 2nd storey: this is the single surviving bay of a C16 house, which now forms part of late C20 shop premises. The rendered exterior, shop front and upper sash windows are all of the C20. INTERIOR: the frame partly survives on the 1st storey. The west end wall has arched braces to the tie-beam, but no evidence of original studding; the building is likely either to have extended further westwards or to have been butted up against a pre-existent structure. The roof has been raised and the original form lost.
