Description
No. 4 St John's Street is a house dating from the late 16th century, with a later addition from the late 16th or 17th century that may incorporate an earlier building to the west. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, featuring a plastered plinth and plain tiled roofs. It has two red brick ridge stacks and one gault brick end stack on the right side, along with a rear gable end stack. The house is two storeys high and has an L-plan layout, with a long jetty of three and one long bay. There is a 19th-century dairy in a lean-to on the west side. The original entrance has been blocked, and there is a 20th-century door on the left side. The ground floor includes three shuttered windows, which consist of two casements and one hung sash window. On the first floor, there are five casement windows. Inside, the building features an exposed floor frame with chamfered joists, a wall plate with a splayed under squinted scarf joint, and a cambered tiebeam in the room to the west.
