Description

No. 2 Risbygate Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates back to the early 16th century, with alterations and additions made in the early 19th century. The front is made of white brick from the 19th century, while the core of the building is timber-framed. It has a slate roof with a wide paired modillion eaves soffit.

The building is three storeys high and includes a cellar. The exterior features a two-window range with sash windows in plain painted reveals; the first storey has 12-pane windows, and the second storey has 6-pane windows, all topped with flat gauged arches. On the ground storey, there is a small late 20th-century shop window with a fascia board above it, along with a six-panel door that has a plain fanlight, set in a semicircular-headed brick surround.

Inside, the cellar, mainly located beneath the 19th-century rear extension, contains a moulded 16th-century beam and a small section of a medieval flint party wall on the east side. The building itself comprises one bay of an early 16th-century timber-framed house. The main beams are exposed; on the ground storey, the beam, which was likely originally jettied, features a complex double ogee moulding with a roll along the soffit. There is some reset 17th-century panelling along the rear wall. On the first storey, there are jowled main posts and a possible blocked original window in the rear wall, along with beams that have double ogee mouldings. The second storey may be original, although it has been raised at the front. The early 19th-century alterations were made in conjunction with No. 1 Risbygate Street and No. 65 St Andrew's Street South.
