Description
32 and 33 Brentgovel Street is a row of three houses and shops, now entirely commercial, dating from the early 18th century. The building is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a slate roof that has a steep pitch, wood modillion eaves cornice, and a moulded plaster frieze.
The exterior features two storeys and cellars, previously with attics, and has an eight-window range. All windows are sashes in flush cased frames, with five having 12 panes and three at the west end being narrower with eight panes. There are six segmental-headed lead-covered dormers, each with 6-pane sashes that have vertical glazing bars only. The ground storey has three double shop fronts with central entries; two of these are late 19th century, while the shop front for No. 33 is a late 20th-century replacement designed to match. The shop fronts for No. 32 have projecting bases beneath the windows.
Inside, the ground storey reveals exposed ceiling timbers, including chamfered main beams and joists set on edge, along with one blocked former corner fireplace. The space consists of six bays. Access to the upper storey is through the adjacent 20th-century shop to the west, and this area is used as part of their premises. The upper storey also has exposed timbers, including roof timbers, as the upper ceilings have been removed. The roof features clasped purlins, and the framing is sparse, with some reused components.
