Description
Nos. 4, 5, and 6 Frankwell is a row of three shops that were originally dwellings, dating from the late 16th century. The buildings are timber-framed with brick infilling on the ground floor and feature a plain tiled roof. They stand three storeys high and have a seven-window range. There is a central arched entrance leading to a rear courtyard, and the shop front to the right has been renewed, featuring a central door flanked by renewed windows with brackets supporting a canopy above. The two shop fronts on the left have outer doorways with a small window alongside each. The upper storeys are framed with close studding and a middle rail, displaying irregular fenestration. To the left, there are three closely spaced windows, and there are two centrally located windows, all likely from the early 20th century, with mullions and transoms. The right side features 4-pane and 16-pane sash windows. A moulded bressumer supports the jettied second storey, which includes oriel windows with three and four lights, each with moulded bressumers carried on brackets beside central mullioned windows. The rear wall has stacks for chimneys.
