Description

SHREWSBURY

SJ4812NE FRANKWELL 653-1/10/326 (South West side) 30/05/69 Fellmongers' Hall (Darwin Centre) (Formerly Listed as: FRANKWELL (West side) Woolstore at rear of Nos 4, 5 and 6)

II

Former fellmongers' hall, now community centre. Early C16. Timber-framed with plain tiled roof and brick infilling to ground floor. 2-3 storeys, canted range in 2 distinct phases. Inserted openings to ground floor, the wall partly opened away to a late C20 extension on the right. Renewed casement windows above. Framed in square panels with some tension bracing. Attic storey framed independently above a principal rail which may have been original wall plate. Framing not continuous throughout the length of the building, suggesting several phases of construction. INTERIOR: hall is divided into at least 4 bays by major trusses (inserted partition walls obscure further structural evidence). 3 visible trusses, each of different design, but each incorporating tie beam, or remains of tie beam below the level of the existing wall plate, suggesting that walls have been raised. One queen post truss, one truss with elbowed braces carrying collar, the third with angle braces to raised tie beam or collar which carries queen struts to upper collar. (Vernacular Architecture Group, Shropshire: 1982-).
