Description

Fellmongers' Hall, now known as the Darwin Centre, is a former fellmongers' hall that serves as a community centre. It dates back to the early 16th century and features a timber-framed structure with a plain tiled roof and brick infilling on the ground floor. The building has two to three storeys and a canted range that was constructed in two distinct phases. The ground floor has inserted openings, and part of the wall has been opened up for a late 20th-century extension on the right. Above, there are renewed casement windows. The framing consists of square panels with some tension bracing. The attic storey is framed independently above a principal rail, which may have originally been the wall plate. The framing is not continuous along the entire length of the building, indicating several phases of construction.

Inside, the hall is divided into at least four bays by major trusses, although inserted partition walls obscure further structural details. There are three visible trusses, each with a different design. Each truss includes a tie beam or remnants of a tie beam below the existing wall plate, suggesting that the walls have been raised. The trusses include one queen post truss, one truss with elbowed braces supporting a collar, and a third truss with angle braces to a raised tie beam or collar that supports queen struts to the upper collar.
