Description
Nos. 113 and 114 Frankwell are a pair of shops that likely started as dwellings, dating from the early 17th century. The buildings are timber-framed and feature a plain tiled roof. They stand two storeys high with an attic and have a two-window range. The facade is framed in square panels with close studding and includes middle rails.
There is a central arched passage entry adorned with open-work decorative timber in the tympanum, flanked by plain shop windows that have separate doorways to their right. The upper storey jetties out, supported by a moulded bressumer. The first floor features two full-height projecting square gabled bays, each with bands of five-light mullioned and transomed windows, and balustraded studs both above and below the windows. The attic contains two-light windows, and the gable apex is decorated with quatrefoil panels. This building is a substantially complete example, showcasing balustraded studs in a distinctive local style.
