Description

Boots Optician is a hall house that has been converted into a shop. It dates back to the early 15th century but was re-faced in the 18th century and underwent alterations and extensions in the late 20th century. The building features a timber frame encased in painted render and has an old tile hipped roof.

Originally designed in an L-plan with four by two framed bays, the layout is now irregular due to a rear extension. The building stands two storeys high and has a chimney with a clay pot and a large base that projects from the right-hand gable. The exterior includes sash windows with glazing bars, a black painted plinth, and boxed eaves. The entrance front is symmetrical with three bays, featuring sash windows on the first floor. There are two 20th-century shop windows with a pair of entrance doors in between, topped with a large fascia board.

Inside, the ground floor reveals wide, plain joists in the right-hand section. The first floor showcases jowled posts and large arched braces. The first and fourth roof trusses are exposed and include redundant crown posts, while the middle truss, likely central to the former hall, has an arched brace collar. Remnants of wattle and daub can be found in the second roof truss, and there are very wide rafters throughout. The first floor also features old, wide plank floors in some areas.
