Description
The White Gate is a hall house that has been converted into a residential home. It dates back to the early 15th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 16th century and late 18th century.
The building features a mix of materials, including part timber frame with brick infill and part brick laid in Flemish bond. It has an old tiled gabled roof. Originally, the structure had a rectangular plan consisting of three framed bays, but it has since been modified into a T-plan.
The exterior is two storeys high and includes two chimneys topped with cornice heads. The windows are 19th-century casements with glazed bars. The entrance front, facing south, has three bays, with the right bay projecting as a gable that contains two-light casement windows on both the ground and first floors. The left section features a combination of a two-light and a three-light window on the first floor, a large four-light window on the ground floor, and a 20th-century glazed door located to the right within an enclosed gabled porch. The ground floor windows have segmental arched heads. The right-hand return wall displays exposed timber framing with irregularly placed windows.
Inside, some of the timber frame is exposed, showcasing a jowled post and large tie beams on the first floor, along with redundant crown post roof trusses. The central truss is supported by large curved brackets that extend from the posts on both floors. The first floor also features 18th to 19th-century wall panelling and old plank floors.
