Description

The Red Lion Inn is an inn with stables that now serves as a public house. It dates back to the 16th century and has been altered and extended in the 17th, 19th, and mid-20th centuries. The building features a mix of materials, including part timber frame with painted brick infill, part timber frame encased in painted brick, and part painted roughcast. The roofs are covered with old tiles and have hipped and gabled designs.

The inn has an L-shaped plan consisting of two sections with six framed bays, along with extensions on the right and at the rear. It stands two storeys high and has four chimneys, one of which is from the late 16th century and features a large weathered base and clay pots. The exterior includes a black painted plinth and open eaves. The windows are a combination of 18th and 19th century sash windows with glazing bars, as well as 19th and 20th century casement windows with glazing bars.

On the entrance front, the left section is the oldest and has two single bay cross gables linked by a parapet, featuring large pointed and square hoodmoulds painted black. There is a platband at the first floor level. The left gable has sash windows, while the right gable has a casement window on the first floor under a segmental arch, and a large projecting bay window with a slate roof at the ground floor. The central entrance features a six-panelled door, now partly glazed, situated in an early 20th century open porch with a gabled roof. To the right, there is a tall projecting chimney. The left return shows exposed timber framing with a former entrance door that is now disused. The right section consists of two bays, with a small two-light casement window on the left and a large tripartite sash window on the right at the first floor. The ground floor has a former carriageway that has been refronted with two 20th century four-light casement windows and a narrow door. The interior has not been inspected.
