Description
This building, located at 165 and 166 Frankwell in Shrewsbury, is a row of three shops that are currently used as two. It dates back to the early 16th century and features a timber-framed structure that is partly encased in brick and roughcast render, topped with plain tiled roofs. The building has three stepped parallel gabled ranges facing the street and stands two storeys high, with an additional basement in the right-hand section.
The façade consists of a three-window range, with Nos. 166 and 167 now combined into a single unit. A flat-roofed shop extension projects forward from No. 167, which includes a three-light casement window in the gable above. The side wall has two weatherboarded gables, which may have originally been dormer windows.
No. 166 features a shop front with two doorways flanking a central window, and above it, there is a square oriel window with mullions and a transom. The upper storey displays mock framing in small panels, likely over the original framing. No. 165 has a wide gable facing the street, framed in tall panels that are probably not original, along with an inserted shop front and an early 20th-century shop display window on the first floor. It also has a casement window in the gable apex, which is adorned with balustraded studs below the tie beam and raking struts over a collar.
On the north elevation of No. 165, there is a wide gable framed in square panels, featuring long raking braces and a bressumer over an infilled brick ground floor. This section includes a central 12-pane sash window. Additionally, there is a brick rear wing with a central door and inserted double doors to the right, which has a projecting sill band that continues the line of the bressumer from the original build. No. 167 was listed separately on September 19, 1972.
