Description

This is a row of two houses, with shops, dating to the early 18th century, although the front facade was altered in the late 18th century and modified again in the mid-20th century. The building materials are limestone ashlar for the front and slate for the roofs.

The exterior presents three storeys and an attic, with a five-window front, although the centre windows are blind. The second floor has two twelve-pane sash windows on each side of the centre. The first floor has a large 20th-century window to number 11 and a large opening with an early 20th-century casement window to number 12, with a blind light to the right. Modern shopfronts, of no particular interest, run the full width of the building. Channelled pilaster strips are at each end, and a platband sits above the first floor. Flat pilaster strips flank the central arched blind light at this level. A moulded cornice with a blocking course and parapet tops the facade. Deep ridge stacks are located to the left and right. The rear elevation is ashlar-faced and has six/six sash windows to the rear of number 11, with plate glass replacements elsewhere. Smaller windows light the staircases, and a parapet runs along the top. Various extensions have been added to the lower floors.

The interiors were only inspected in part and include an open wooden staircase with columnar newels and twisted barley-sugar rails. There is partial original panelling in the entrance passage; the front first-floor room in number 11 features wall panelling, shutters, and a box cornice.
