Description
No. 1 St Michael's Place is a quadrant-shaped house dating from the late 18th century, which was restored in 1984. The building is constructed of fine ashlar, and the roof is not visible.
The exterior features four storeys and a four-bay curved principal elevation, with a single bay extending at a right angle to the left. The ground floor has a central pair of panelled doors, flanked by eight-over-eight pane sash windows that sit beneath extended wood lintels, which may be remnants of earlier shop fronts. Above the ground floor, there is a platband inscribed with "ST MICHAEL'S PLACE" in incised Roman capitals. The upper windows are mainly six-over-six sashes, with three-over-three sashes in the attic. Notably, the centre-left bay of the first floor has an eight-over-eight sash, while the centre-right bays of all upper floors are blind.
On the ground floor, there is a short return with a six-pane window above a twelve-pane window, and two doors with transom lights. A sill band is present at the second floor, along with a cavetto cornice above the second floor and attic, topped with a blocking course and parapet. At the rear, to the right, there is a very deep ashlar stack. The ground floor also features a panel commemorating Marks and Spencer's Centenary Year, 1884-1984, during which the building was restored and part of it was designated for the St. Michael's Centre for Senior Citizens. The interior has not been inspected.
