Description

Two houses with shops, dating to the early 19th century, are located on Westgate Street, returning to Parsonage Lane. The buildings are constructed of painted ashlar with a roof that is not visible. The front elevation has four storeys and a basement, extending one and two windows wide. The first and second floors feature six-over-six sash windows, while the attic has two-over-two windows, with one window being blind. A splayed corner has a six-over-six-pane window on the first floor, blind windows on the second floor, and a two-over-two pane window in the attic. The left return to Parsonage Lane is two windows wide, with blind windows to the first and second floors in the right-hand bay. The right-hand bay's second floor has a two-over-two window to the attic; the left-hand bay has six-over-six pane sashes, with a three-over-three pane window to the attic. The ground floor return is blank, except for a door and broad platband. The ground floor has a 19th-century shopfront with pilasters, console brackets, and fascia; the entrance is located on the splay to number 36. A modern shopfront of no particular interest exists at number 37. A continuous lintel, frieze, cornice, blocking course, and parapet run along both the front and the return. There are two chimney stacks, one to the right of each property. The interiors have not been inspected. These houses are part of the Regency rebuilding of Bath's centre, undertaken in a restrained Neoclassical style.
