Description

No. 3 Stall Street is a shop with accommodation above, built around 1790 by Thomas Baldwin. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof. The building has a single depth plan and is positioned against No. 6 Abbey Church Yard.

Architecturally, it is designed in the Adam Neo-Classical style and stands three storeys tall with a width of two windows. The ground floor has a modern shopfront, while the first floor features a platband with lowered nine/nine-sash windows in plain reveals. The second floor includes a sill band enriched with Vitruvian scrolls, a six/six-sash window on the left, and a blind window recess on the right. The cornice and parapet are ramped up to align with No. 2 Stall Street, and the roof is not visible from the front.

The north colonnade of the Grand Pump Room is adjacent to the south flank of No. 3, which has a modern shopfront within the colonnade. This is above a shallow round-headed recess adorned with garlands and paired pilasters, although it has been partly altered by the addition of a six/six sash window. The blind feature on the south wall was intended to mirror a similar feature on the north wall of the Grand Pump Room. The parapet has a roof pent against an ashlar stack with pots and a flat-topped dormer.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the design of No. 3 is part of Baldwin's overall plan for the redevelopment of this area following the Bath Improvement Act of 1789, contributing to the significant Neoclassical remodelling of the city centre. It is part of a group with Nos. 6-14 Abbey Churchyard and was a tobacconist shop for many years.
