Description

Number 42 (East half) is a house and shop located on Cornhill in Bury St Edmunds, dating from the early 19th century, possibly incorporating an older core. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a plaintiled mansard roof.

The exterior has three storeys, with one window on each storey facing Cornhill. The first storey has 20th-century casement windows with gauged brick arched surrounds, while the second storey features a late 19th-century six-pane sash window. The ground storey includes a plate-glass shop window flanked by fluted pilasters, with a fascia and cornice above an early 19th-century architrave. To the left, there is an early 20th-century half-glazed door with a rectangular fanlight, set within a moulded wood architrave from the same period. The return front to Brentgovel Street has a segmental brick arch over the 20th-century casement window on the first storey and a 20th-century shop window on the ground storey.

The interior retains elements from the early 16th century, specifically the remains of the east bay of the adjoining west half of No. 42. Historical records, such as Warren's map from 1747, indicate that this site was marked as 'the Hall'.
