Description

43A and 43B Cornhill is a building that contains two shops, which were formerly a house and shop. It dates from the 17th century but has undergone significant alterations in the late 20th century. The building is timber-framed and features 20th-century render in panels with a wave pattern. It has plaintiled roofs and a coved stucco eaves cornice.

The exterior is two storeys high with attics and has a five-window range. The windows are 9-pane 20th-century sashes arranged in a 2:1:2 pattern, with the center window slightly projecting on the first storey. There are two 20th-century shop fronts on the ground floor. The building also has three hipped dormers with plain 20th-century two-light casement windows. At the rear of No.43A, there is a double gable and a long rear wing, while No.43B has a parallel wing with two flat-headed dormers on its northern slope, also featuring two-light casement windows.

On the upper front, there is a small plaster panel with an obscure and partially illegible Latin inscription related to the Bury fire, likely connected to the Bullen family, who owned the property for several generations from the late 18th century and were noted local antiquarians.

Inside, No.43B has exposed timbering on the first storey, including chamfered main beams and trimmers in the front range, with all timbers exposed in the rear range, which has smaller main beams and non-aligned trimmers. The joists are positioned on edge, and there are some reused timbers, but no evidence of original partitions. The attics are currently inaccessible. The interior of No.43A reportedly has no visible structure.
